van wont start

I have a 2000 Chevy Astro, it wont start. The last time I drove, the radio, speedomter, gas gage quit working while I was driving.and the battery light was on. I can use the keyless entry, the turn signals, dome lights, daytime driving lights, etc. still come on. Would someone help with some information, so when I take it in, I will be a little informed. Afraid I have been taken advantage of in the past. Trying to prevent that.

Thanks
JFD

Sounds like the alternator went belly up. Does it turn over at all?

No, but I put a battery charger on it this morning, it charged immediately, and started. Then turned on the radio and the air, the gages quit working again. Turned the engine off and it wouldnt start.

Again, sounds like the alternator is finished. If the battery is more than 2 yrs. old, I'd probably go ahead and replace it too, whether it checks good or not.
