'90 Taurus Transmission

My 1990 3.0L Ford Taurus with 165K has been having many problems with its automatic transmission. I know that this model of Taurus is known to have is very badly designed tranmission. It seem to hesitate alot when trying to get into second gear. The fuild is at the correct level and I check it often to be sure it is. What causes this problem? about how expensive would it be to fix?

On low mileage failures on Sable/Taurus I believe it's a planetary gear problem. At 165k miles you probably avoided the low mileage failures that are so common and have just worn it out. You should be looking at about $1500-2000 to have it overhauled which is about all the car is worth. Don't even think about letting someone talk you into installing a used one unless you like to gamble on long shots. I would drive it until it dies and then send it to the crusher.

Wouldn't surprise me, I was just ballparking it. Either way it's probably not worth the $$$ at that age and mileage.
