'96 Lincoln with Cracked Manifold
I have a '96 Lincoln Town Car, 4.6 liter engine and 112,000 miles and had a problem of the car overheating. I added fluid to it, drove a short distince and again the car overheated severely. As I was traveling away from home and the car finally just stopped on me, I had it towed to a local dealership. My thoughts was the water pump, but the estimate was for $1,400 and a cracked intake manifold. Having me over the barrell, I had to get it repaired.
When complete, I asked for the bad part and I noticed the intake manifold was split through the center and the material was a composite-type material, not metal. Is this a problem with this engine? Is it common for this type of part to not be metal? Should I be looking for a new car now?
Thank you for your help.

This is a very common problem with that engine. The intake splits and always in the same spot - right behind the alternator. I dont think you have to worry about it anymore if you had it replaced. The new intake should be the updated version with the section behind the alternator made of metal. Open the hood and take a look. It should be easy to see.
