98 NEON check engine soon codes

98 NEON check engine soon codes question
My daughter's NEON 2.0 l SOHC check engine soon light came on Friday. We just had a complete tune up in May so I couldn't figure why this would be. In any case we now have an AUTOZONE in our area, so I ran the car up there yesterday and they pulled the code for free. The code is "P0401, exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient detected in the exhaust gas recirculation system" The girl that ran the test didn't know how to use the computer to get the repair procedures. I wanted to buy an EGR valve but she said she was not confortable selling me a part that might not fix the problem. Can anyone out there advise what I need to do. The AUTOZONE hasn't had their Grand Opening yet and they are still training. At least I was able to get the code and now hope I can get advise from here.
Thanks in Advance for your help. I have always been able to count of this forum for excellent advice.

it is not really very hard to replace although you may have to have the codes cleared with a scanner, some vehicles will still clear codes by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes but not all of them.
the check engine light will usually eventually go off after repairs are made but it may take several trips or drive cycles before the computer will see that the problem is no longer occuring.

I guess everybody's assuming the valve is an automatic fix. I don't see anything about how many miles are on this thing. Is a plugged passage even a possibility? Does it use a PFE transducer?

If there was a problem with the egr flow, there would be some sort of drivablity problem such as knocking wouldn't there? It could be a bad sensor or a related vaccuum hose. Is there a way to test the valve and know its bad before replacing it?

Now Dead
Thanks for all the input. I did forget to advise that the miles are 93k. Last night my daughter had a very hard time getting it started and it was rocking like crazy when she got it home. I took it out and stomped on it and blew it all out. After that it did idle smoother. But this morning she just called me at work and told me that it wouldn't start at all. I guess I will be pushing it to the mechanics tonight and paying the $98.00/hr for dianogstics labor now being charged in central NJ.

blocked passageways would be uncommon on most chrysler vehicles however there egr valves are notorious for problems and is very common.
uses a pressure and electric solenoid for appling vacum to the egr which comes with a new valve.
I assume the computer uses o2 readings such as the integrator counts to determine wether the egr is functioning correctly as there is no egr position or exhuast pressure monitoring sensor.
the egr wouldnt cause the vehicle not to start, hopefully its not a timing belt problem as they are also known for bending valves.

WAs the EGR
The car would start but was rough. I started it when I got home that evening and it was carboned up. The EGR valve was a little difficut to remove from the top end but impossible to put back in. I had to jack the car up and climb under it to get it aligned correctly. I farted over the top end to much of the day. The car is running normal again and the old lines and valve were filled with carbon. I think this stemmed from my daughter not telling me for a month or so that the car was running rough. She had a bad spark wire so she was only runing on 3 cylinders for god only knows how long. I keep trying to tell here that a car needs maintenance and TLC but she maintains the same thoughts my wife has "when it won't go Doug/Dad will fix it"
Thanks for all the help. One more chore crossed from the list.
