Rear Brake Adjustment Question(s)

I just put new drums and semi-metallic brake shoes on the back of my 87 Chev. Celebrity. My question is, how tight? should the shoes be up against the drums? How do I know when I have them adjusted up enough?

After getting everything put back together, I drove it down the driveway to test the brakes. When I apply the brakes they sound like they are grinding and seem to have a bit more travel in the pedal that I think they should have. Is this normal (I usually buy brakes that are non-metalic and I know just enough to get me into trouble ).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
VanceVP

Adjust until there is a slight drag. Noise is not uncommon with new friction surfaces, although I've personally never heard of 'semi-metallic' brake shoes.
