1992 Mazda Navajo,4 wd

I can't stand to drive my Mazda without airconditioning anymore this summer.

However two local auto mechanic shops said it would cost me at least $500. to get it working.

I don't know why because my AZ is blowing stron hot air.. Why can't they just refill the AC with freon etc?

There could literally be hundreds of reasons why they "can't just refill." Details of any estimate you may have recieved would be the only way anyone can answer your question.

It doesn't do much good to add refrigerant to a leaky system.
You'll probably find out $500 is the very low end of what it may really need. That's cheap in today's A/C world.
