Hot 95 Nissan Pathfinder

Hello,

Recently I have been noticing that my '95 Nissan Pathfinder get dangerously close to the overheat indicator on my thermostat when I am idling at a red light, etc. As soon as I begin normal driving speeds however, the temp. goes down.

Does this sound like a water pump about to go out on me? I have 156,784 miles on the vehicle. What else could it be? Radiator, etc.? Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
Joey

Check to make sure the electric fan(s) are coming on properly when the temp goes up. Could be one or more fans or their sensors are not functioning. Barring that water pump, thermostat, clogged system are all possibilities. If the Pathfinder has an engine-driven fan (I can't remember how that vehicle is configured), then water pump, thermostat, general clogging in system. Whatever the cause, don't wait to fix it; running near the red line on temp for newer vehicles is a short ticket to blown head gaskets and/or warped heads.
