Jeep Wrangler gas gauge stays on full

Can someone please tell me how to check if the problem is in the gauge or if its in the sending unit in the fuel tank. I have a 1991 wrangler and the gas gauge never has worked since I got it in 2000. How can I find out what is causing it to stay on full?

If you unplug the connection at the tank and jumper the sending unit wire to the ground wire the guage should read empty. If that holds true the fuel level sender is most likely faulty. If not you need to check the wiring between the tank and guage.

Davo, thanks for the reply. Do I need to drop the gas tank to get at the
wire, or can it be reached from under the Jeep? Will it be the ONLY wire
going into the tank, or are there more than one. Thanks
