disconnect...
...the wire harness going to the fuel tank, turn the ignition on (engine doesn't need to be running) and the guage should go all the way in one direction.
next...with a jumper wire, ground the purple wire in that same connector on the harness end (not the end that goes to the tank) and the guage should go all the way to the other extreme.
if you get these results, the problem is the sending unit in the tank and the tank must be removed to replace it. if you don't get these results, you have a guage or wiring problem. more often then not, it's the sending unit and performing this simple test will verify it for you

Thx But...
I guess I should have added that we just changed the gas tank, and the sending unit, the problem we thought would have been resolved when we changed the sending unit( also this car is equiped with an electric/digital fuel gauge the only thing that shows on the display is either a P or an L every once in a great while you will see the actual fuel amount and gas milage ) but to no evaile the dern thing still wont work right. Could anybody tell me where I would look to find the wiring harness to see if something is wring with than and when I do find it what would I look for? Again thank you all so much for your help! This DIY is awsome!

yeah...
...all of the pertinent info would have been nice...jeez.
remove the dash display and measure the resistance of the sending unit circuit...should be between 0 and 90 ohms...if it is, send your display out to a certified delco repair center and have it repaired
