Bad battery (?) when engine at op temp

1979 E150, 351W, a/t

When trying to start the engine after a brief shutdown, like for a fill-up or to hop out for a Quik-E-Mart visit, it tries to turn over but the battery does the "er, err, errrrrrr" thing and that's all she wrote. Nothing happens on other attempts to start, no clicking, though maybe one more tired "errrr" might groan out. Two ways to get it started; luck out and get a quick jump (starts right up) or wait 15/20 minutes, after which it starts okay.

It only does this when the engine has been at operating temperature for a while. Starts fine all other times. No problems running-wise. No "Idiot" lights. Battery checks at 75% charge, cold or hot.

Thanks for any suggestions!

take the battery and get it load tested if its not up to par replace it doesnt sound like it is as jump starting gets the vehicle started.
your starter may be dragging or pulling excessive amperage when hot this is a common problem and usually requires starter replacement but first check to make sure your battery is good and the correct size for the vehicle.
