that doesnt sound good........

Hello all
I have an 89 Nissan hardbody pickup, 4WD, 5 speed manual tranny, Z24 engine, 200k. This vehicle suddenly developed a rather loud knock, i can lighten the sound by feathering the gas pedal. The sound religiously disappears when the cluch is pressed or in neutral. I have had a couple diff friends ride in the back and walk along side trying to pinpoint the location of the noise, one swore it was the rear end, the other was positive it was more tword the front. I noticed some leaking gear oil, so i added a half quart to the rear end and a little over a quart to the tranny (the correct types according to the manual) to get them back up to full. I cant feel any play in either of the universals. Nothing has quietened the sudden knocking so far, so any help would be appreciated. This is a loaner vehicle from a friend while i'm fixing mine.....GRRRR So i have to have it fixed up before i can give it back (and get back to work on mine). The truck runs great, has no problem shifting, no grinding, just this noise........ Thanks in advance for your time, if any other information is needed please ask.

Thanks again
Rick

Check the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. You may also have a rod knock at that mileage.Does it knock if you rev it in neutral?

Thank you both for the replies. I've checked the U-joints and all seem nice and tight. Pretty sure its not a rod knock, there is no noise when the engine is in neutral and revved, or with the clutch in and the engine revved for that matter. So i guess i'll be tearing into this one and checking those pressure plate bolts next.

Thank you again
Rick

update

hello all
Just noticed i have alot (seems to me) of play in the rear end, i can rotate the driveshaft approximately 1/16 to an 1/8 of a turn with the tires on the ground with a nice audible clunk. After inspecting i found a couple teeth knocked off and alot of shavings in the rear end. Think this may be the source of my knocking? The frequency does increase with speed.
I thought it was worth asking before i pull the tranny to check things out there.

Thanks
Rick

That Doesn't Sound Good

You mean you opened up the rear differential "pumpkin"-took the cover off
And found teeth missing and shavings?
Uh, I think you may have found your problem
I don't have any diy tips for diffs, sorry (I take mine to a specialist-they can be tricky)
Maybe some one else will chime in
But good investigative work my friend

Exactly

I removed the cover to find two broken teeth on the ring gear (but that doesnt seem to be where the play is coming from) and the shavings. There is a small bit of play between the ring and pinion gears, like they arent meshing properly, but most of the play is "after" the ring gear. Between the ring gear and the wheels. I apologize for the vague explanation, but after two hours of looking at pics and learning terminology its the best i can do So i hope it makes a little more sense. Thank you all again for the replies.

Rick

BTW, i'm thinking a junk rear end might be the easiest and cheapest way to go if i can't fix this one myself, at least i know a couple things to look for at the yard now, any thoughts?
