smoking alternator belt

My alternator belt squealed, smoked, and snapped. I've since replaced it, but it still smokes. First, it was loose. I tightened it, but there's been very little change. Could it be any other cause besides tension? My car's a 1994 Dodge Caravan with a 4 cyl., 2.5L engine.

It sounds like the alternator or something else the belt drives is locking up. Remove the belt and check the alternator and water pump pulleys for free rotation.

Will do. I noticed that there's a crack in the alternator. The water pump moves easily, but I'm sure about the alternator. I'll check it. Thanks.

Thanks! It was the pulley on the alternator that was seriously stuck. I replaced it. It works. Dunno if that was the best thing though.
