Engine pings..2000 Ford Ranger

I have 2000 Ford Ranger 6cyl with 28,000 miles on it and it pings when going up a hill. I use a fuel additive at every fill up, it doesn't matter what brand of gas or if I use unleaded vs premium. It actually sounds like a diesel engine when I am going up any hills, that is the only time it pings. What could be causing this?

thank you......glenda

The title of your post indicates the truck is less than a year old

Follow Davo's advice. You may have an EGR problem.

you didnt state what size engine you had but there is a tsb on sparkknock for the 3.0 liter v6 might want to see your dealer to see if it applies to your vehicle tsb 00-24-8 and what the repair may require.

Try leaving the fuel additive out for a couple tanks it may be the cause of the problem.

technical service bulliton issued by ford they will usually issue a bulliton for a known problem or customer complaint and what needs to be done to correct the problem or complaint this aids dealerships and technicians in repairing the vehicles problem.
sparkknock is another word for pinging.

This TSB will help with the spark knock, but it will not eliminate it. Sorry, you have a 3.0L, thats why you are the third owner of a vehicle with such low milage. Unfortunately, all you can do is live with it or get ride of it. You will otherwise spend a lot of money, and deal with a lot of frustation for nothing.

Thanks Terry....it was my Dad's and he gave it to me so I can't really complain. I was concerned that something was wrong with it. If I let it go will it do any damage to the engine?

thanks......glenda

quite possibly...

...detonation (pinging) most definately can cause damage...at the very least it will damage the connecting rod bearings...the worst case is broken piston(s).
