Starting Prob. 86 F150

I have a 86 Ford F150. 300 6 cyl. It has had intermittent starting problems. It wont start at all now. It acts like a dead batt. I bought a new one, still nothing. I do have lights etc. When I hit the start switch, nothing happens, except the lights dim out. How do I check to see if it is my starter batt, or solinoid (sic). I do not have high dollar tools so I will have to depend on basics, as always, thanks in advance for any help.

on a quick note, it sounds like a starter has (finally) gone bad. if the lights dim when you try to start, something is drawing a chunk of power out of your battery. Either a defective solenoid or the starter motor. take the starter out and have it tested (for free) at places like Autozone. hope this helps to get you there.
