Question Old lady Buick (Thats what I call it)

I have a 1994 Buick Lesabre I have had a number of people look at it and no one has figured it out. There is no set pattern to it but some times when your going down the road it feels like it literally coughs. It chugs really hard and if you are stopped at a light when it does it it will die. It has always started up again but latley it is dieing more often. No codes from the computer but the service engine soon light always come on when it does it and reset after you restart the car and if it runs good the light does not come back on. May not mess up again for a week. Have more back ground but dont want to steer you in to a certain direction, yet.

That makes no sense at all. If the check engine light comes on it will store a memory code unless either you clear it or there is a problem with the computer itself.

The check engine question aside (I'm curious, too, how you get a light but no code) the item that I have had go bad on my truck with similar symptoms is the fuel pump (with fuel filter as a related item). The fuel pump can be checked with a pressure gauge, though if it looses pressure intermittently you may not get a definitive check on it.

The light in not a check engine light I don't know if there is a specific check engine light or if the "Service Engine Light" is that light. I have never unhooked the battery to clear any codes. I was leaning tord a fuel problem but did not want to influence any ones thinking on this subject. The gas gauge somtimes is very floaty and I am thinking about pulling the gas tank and cleaning it out and checking out the fuel pump, float and filter. I really did not know how to clean out the tank so if you have any ideas, please pass them along. I don't know what computer is in this year car but my buddy had a 96 Z28 that no one could read I don't know if this is the problem or if it is just not storing codes because of its symtoms. Either way the light does not come back on after the car is restarted. Also thanks to you guys and your quick response!!

If the SES light comes on only when it has stalled that is normal. You need to know what your losing spark or fuel and may have to drive with a fuel pressure guage taped to the windshield until it fails again.Common possibilities on the car in question are crank sensor, pcm, loose baffle in the gas tank, fuel pump/strainer(been redesigned)IAC motor(redesigned). You could have a loose power or ground also if you decide to check start from the battery and make sure the terminals are clean not just tight. There is a ground under the coil area that can cause stalling.FYI I listed the possibilities in no special order of importance.

I am really leaning tord a fuel problem. Where can I get a fuel pressure gauge and were do I tap it in on my car? Also to clean out my gas tank, what is the best way to do that? to make EPA happy and to do a good job.

Autozone will rent you a guage I think, but cleaning the tank is not what I'm talking about in my post.I also don't feel it's your problem.
