Losing Oil (Pressure)

In an 1998 Isuzu Trooper. No oil on the Ground ?

During the course of let's say 3000 miles the oil volume goes from 5 quarts to about 1-2 quarts, the oil pressure indicator also shows a drop from around 85 to 40, the oil that comes out is pretty burned up but there is no black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Any ideas...

First don't run it low on oil.Second oil either leaks out externally and drips, burns out the tailpipe(blue smoke not black)or gets in the cooling system. It does not evaporate like water. My bet is it's burning the oil going down the road,is there oil in the air filter or hose from it to the throttle body?I would rather use hours of vehicle operation as an oil use indicator than mileage. The reason for that is maybe a vehicle sees alot more time idling than the next one so the engine has actually ran a much longer time which will change the amount of oil used.
