brake light on dash

Help! The brake light on the dashboard has been on for a few days. Any ideas? I don't have an owners manual, as I bought the car used. It is a '96 FORD TAURUS station wagon with 95,000 miles. Also, the service engine light comes on once in a while, but it doesn't stay on constantly. Any help would be appreciated.

check the brake fluid level it may be low causing the brake light to come on normal wear on the brake pads or shoes will cause the fluid level to decrease in the mastercylinder.
it could also have a leak and would be a good idea to have the braking system checked.
when your check engine light comes on the ecm stores a code and requires a scanner to read the code, autozone can usually scan the codes and you can post the code number back here or you can see a shop to have it diagnosed.

Thanks, bejay, I hope it's that simple. Also, I guess I need to take a trip to AutoZone. Thanks, again!
