'88 Lincoln Transmission Problem

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a 1988 Lincoln Town Car(5.0 motor) w/ a transmission problem. It will not shift past 2nd gear....and it shifts roughly into 2nd gear. It makes no difference if I put it into "Drive" or "Overdrive", same problem. It has 130K miles on it, but I have only owned it for 10K of those. About 5K miles ago, it started slipping in Overdrive at about 65 MPH. But it only happened about once a month, so I was not too worried about it. Guess I should have worried.

Is this going to mean a total transmission replacement(or overhaul), or is this something that might be repairable(as in less than $300)?

it's repairable...

...but not for $300 unless you can find a used trans and do the work yourself.

the direct clutch has probably failed...not uncommon on high mileage AOD transmissions. take it to a trans shop and get it evaluated..including an estimate...then weigh your options
