94 Nissan Maxima slow heat and gas smell

I have a 94 Nissan Maxima with 95,000 miles. It takes about 15 minutes for the heat to start working in the morning and does not work when idling. I also have a gas smell when I turn on the heater that lasts for a few minutes.
What could be causing this?

Check for the fuel leak right away(engine compartment)don't drive the car until it's repaired. You likely have a bad thermostat or clogged heater core causing the heating problem.Btw look at the fuel injectors I've seen them leak fuel before.
