overfilled my oil;
changing oil on my three family vehicles,I overfilled my 99 lumina by a half-quart. I realized my mistake right away and drained to correct capacity.That got me thinking,I know overfilling can cause oil to foam,overheat and designegrate and cause engine damage,but how much is too much,1/2qt. 1qt or more? and also these oil change garages thatuse bulk oil how do they measure how much oil they replace since it's not done by the quart,and a lot of dipsticks don't really show accurately how much the oil has been overfilled,if it's been overfilled.

I wouldn't have lost any sleep over half a quart. The quick change places probably do one of two things. (1) They dispense from the bulk container into a container with quntity marks on it, or (2) the bulk dispensing equipment has its own quantity indicator, like on a gas pump.

The amount of oil being too much and causing a problem would be engine specific and I don't know of any guidelines.I agree with towguy 1/2 qt is no biggie and yes oil is measured from bulk.You don't think a company would give away 1/2 quarts all day do you?Heck every 8-10 oil changes they would lose a complete oil change if they did that.Our dispensers are digital,nothing but first class for Davo lol.
