Remote Starter
I would like to install a remote starter to my car. Is any one better than the other? Is it a DIY job?

I've intalled my own alarm system, and wouldn't hesitate to install a remote start for my truck. But in general, I would not advise it to the average joe. Unless you have ALOT of free time, and/or really enjoy that kind of thing (thats me), pay someone to do it. And then if you have any problems you can always take it back and tell them to fix it. Don't do it yourself just to save money.
I prefer any of the brands manufactured by DEI, but there are many others that are fine too.
If you do choose to DIY. a good website is www.the12volt.com

Problems I have had
I Tried installing a remote starter/keyless entry. The wiring harness descriptions were incorrect. So I bought new schematics from helm which were the oringinal Ford diagrams. Then I had Three Differnt sets of schematics. However the ignition harness had been replaced by another mechanic and it did not have the same color sequence. I would stay away from installing them. Consider an oil heater or something of that nature if your climate warrents it. If it is just something cool to impress your friends with consider a professional installation. However the Keyless entry is invaluable to me.
Those are my thoughts on the matter!

Some cars are easier then others. Keep in mind that if your car uses a theft detterent system (like Hondas or GMs) you'll have to disable that in order to start the car without a key. It's a lot more involved to install a remote starter then a car alarm. You'll have to not only find and cut the starting circuits for the car, but also find the tachometer lead. It's best to let a pro install it in my opinion.. just in case something goes wrong.

The car that I want this for is a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. I don't want to impress my friends but my wife will love this since she can't stand the cold. I know that the ignition key has a chip in it so that it can't be started with an ordinary key. Is this one of the problems for installing a remote starter? From what you guys are saying, I think a pro is the way to go. Does anyone know the approximate price installed?

Remote starts and aftermarket alarms cause more electrical nightmares than most people realize.Wiring insulation should never be cut or pierced because it causes problems for the circuits involved.Voltage can backfeed from remotes also damaging other components also.If you decide to have 1 installed make sure every time you have an electrical problem you inform the person attempting to repair the vehicle.Don't be suprised if they remove it or have you remove it before servicing the vehicle.
