Steering Wheel Problem

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I couldn't get the shifter out of park. Finally after wiggling it and trying to move it, it was able to go into gear. Now when it's in park, the steering wheel doesn't lock. Our mechanic said we have to take it to a dealer to have it fixed because some kind of pin or something broke or came out. My question is, If it broke or came out, will it lock in park again? If not, I'll live with it an not go through the expense. Right now it goes into each gear fine and come out of park like nothing is wrong. Only thing is that the steering wheel doesn't lock when the car is off.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Joe
