Transmission help on a 97 Escort

I am auto illiterate so I hope you understand what I mean. Yesterday my car started acting very strange. While it was still cold it shifted fine, but after it warmed up it didn't really want to go unless you pressed on accelerator hard. It was starting in second versus first. If you shifted down to low gear it started to drive normally. It was fine shifting it manually into the second gear and into overdrive. But it seemed like it didn't want to go past 3rd gear. Any idea what we might be looking at repair wise and cost wise. I am taking it into the shop first thing Monday morning as this is our only car and we need it. The car only has about 120,000 miles on it.

thanks for any help,
Kp

trans?

Have you checked the trans fluid level? How many times have you serviced the trans?

We checked the fluid level, it was about half quart low, and filled it. We only had the car for a few months so we haven't serviced the trans yet.
