2003 mercury cougar fuel problem

I have a 2003 cougar that runs great until gauge gets near 1/4 tank. Car then starts to miss and stall out. As soon as gas is added to tank it runs fine again. Tried fuel treatment but it has not helped at all. Problem started on very cold day and has not got any better. out of ideas any would be appreciated. Do not understand why problem only happens at 1/4 tank. Filter would cause problem all the time as would water in the tank. Steve

I would suspect either a bad fuel pump or a problem with a baffle in the fuel tank. Sometimes those enclosed baffle areas are fed by small passages and can get resrtricted. Filling the tank would make the fuel go over the top of the baffle.

Maybe a bad gauge reading? Fill up the tank when the gauge says 1/4 tank remaining and see if you really had a 1/4 tank of gas. Take it to the dealer if its still under warranty.

There is a RECALL 04N02 on the fuel delivery module(NEW DESIGN). For comtamination of the fuel pump. The problem is most likely to occur when there is less than a 1/4 tank of fuel. Or when the driver has accelerated while making a turning maneuver also while driving up hill. May experience, engine hesitation, loss of power and surging. Take it to the dealer.
