98 Ford Truck Clutch Master Cylinder Problem?

I replaced the clutch disk/plate, slave cylinder, and pilot bearing on a friend's truck this past weekend. My friend is now saying that it's a little hard to put the truck in 1st gear.

It looks like he may have let the reservoir run out of brake fluid prior to us changing the clutch. I'm wondering if this could have damaged the master cylinder.

We were able to bleed the new slave cylinder with no problems, but my guess is that you may still be able to bleed the fluid with a bad master cylinder. Are there any clear cut symptoms for when the master cylinder is bad, or do you think it may be some other problem?

Thanks in advance.

Kept pumping that pedal, I bet there is still air in the system.
