89 Toyota 4x4 pickup idling very fast

I just recently purchased a 1989 Toyota 4x4 pickup. It idles very fast (sounds the same as running 50 down the highway). I noticed today that the temp gauge doesn't get off the cold mark and the upper radiator hose is just bearly warm after driving it for two hours. I think the thermostat might be stuck open or possibly non existant. It's a four cylinder EFI engine. Would the engine running cooler than it should cause the increase in idle speed? Or am I crazy for thinking that way?

Might be Aux. Air Valve (AAV) under the throttle body is stuck open. Might have to replace it.

Check for vacuum leaks and replace the thermostat anyway it should run better warmed up besides more efficiently.

The aux air valve needs to see normal operating temp to close (so idle returns to normal). You don't have that so the idle is at the cold spec (fast).

So you need to replace the thermo with the correct one (190*)

Just make sure you get all the air out. When you add the antifreeze run it with the cap off and vary the rpm till it's good and hot.
