First thing to check is the engine temp guage going almost to the middle? Stuck or no thermostat will prevent OD shift.

The temp gage does not reach the mid point. it stays half way between cold and mid point.
should i replace the thermostat?
if so, what temp? 160 or 180?
Thanks Larry

The OEM is 88c which is 190f. That 1/4 of the way on the guage is close to where it should engage OD but might be a little shy.

Proper reading should be about 3/8 or almost 1/2.

I replaced the thermostat. the temp is close to mid point on the guage.
but still won't go into overdrive.
what else could it be?

I'm sorry

Why don't you drop it off to my house and I'll fix it for you.

BTW: I did try to help you, it's a little hard when I no longer have any info for a '89 Van. We don't maintain an archive of manuels for all the old stuff.
