rack @ pinion bellows kit

my son has a 1991 geo prism lsi.both of his bellows(i call them boots) on his rack @ pinion is busted.i've never replaced these and i know they have a purpose,(he is losing power steering fluid). i seen where i can replace these(i thought i had to buy the whole [email protected] pinion assembly). do these hold fluid? or are they just to keep water and dirt from getting on the inside? i can't tell where he is leaking fluid from all the grease but he says he needs to add fluid once a week. any info would be appreciated. thanks.!!

boots

The boots just keep dirt off the machined chrome cyl.I do not know if you can buy them seperate.I would put the car on jack stands pull the boot back and see if you can see fluid leaking from the shaft or any oter place.
If you have it coming from the shaft you will need a new rack and pinion that has a new boot already.

Michael is right --the boots just keep dirt & water out. The seal is in the end of the rackbehind the boot. I do not know if you can just replace the seals without taking the rack apart. If you do not have a manual go to the library. They usually subscribe to mitchels on demand or a similar service where you can look up repair information.
