1992 Dodge Grand Caravan

hello, was wondering if you might have an idea what is wrong with our van. It's a 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 3.3 motor. It tends to surge in power and backfires once in a while. Think it may be the timing chain???
Thanks,Jack

First, have you checked for engine codes?

This is just a shot in the dark, but I would suspect a few things:

- Ignition wires are shorting out and need replacement. This would be most noticeable in damp or rainy weather.

- Fuel filter is clogged and needs replacing. When was it last replaced?

- Exhaust restriction, usually a converter with a broken ceramic monolith inside. If it rattles when you kick it, then you've found the problem.

When did it last have a tuneup?

When does it backfire?.... during acceleration or decceleration?

I would bet you probably need to give it a good tuneup.

I agree, though it would help to have the other questions answered.

I doubt you have a timing chain problem. You would likeky be hearing a constant rattling maybe even jingling noise in the front of the engine. The sound should change based on engine RPM's. What is the mileage on the engine? I have the same van and engine (mine is a 1990 model) with 154k on it. It sometimes backfires when It is cold or on cold acceleration. I know it needs a tune up, just dont have time to mess with it....LOL. Maybe in the spring.
Any more questions???

Thumbs up

Thanks Everyone!! Mom got a tune-up and all filters replaced. Put some fuel injector cleaner / gas treatment in it and seems to be running very well now!!!
