2002 Chevy Cavalier will crank, but not start
Last night my daughter was driving home from work and her 2002 Chevy Cavalier stopped running while driving. It is a 2002, 4 cyl. automatic trans 4 door model. She said that all lights, radio and heater were still working, but the car would not accelerate or anything. It will crank, but not start. Looking at an earlier post it may be the crank sensor, where on the engine is it located? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Cathy

I haven't worked on many GMs in the last couple of years. While the crank sensor may be one possibility ( I recall this being a pattern failure on some 4 cylinders) it is important to do some diagnostics to avoid replacing good parts needlessly.
First up is to scan for codes and check for fuel pressure/spark/injector pulse.. no particular order but both should be done. If the motor has a timing belt, we should check to be sure that the cam is turning. Once we have establihed which of our basic ingredients is missing, we can direct our diagnostic efforts in the direction required.
If we have all of our basic needs - spark, injector pulse, fuel pressure and compression, we should also check for the possibility of a plugged converter.

As mechanic stated all of the basic diagnostics should be checked first – scan codes, spark, and fuel pressure. I have experienced in the GM 4cyl. a few times that the ignition control module and crank sensor fail together. Which would cause the motor to turn over, but not run.

Thanks Guys
I thank you for your replys, while my husband is quite a capable mechanic, he does not have the diagnostic tools available to him, so we are going to have a local garage look at it. We changed the coil packs hoping it would be something simple, but to no avail. I'll post back and let you know what the garage does to fix it. Thanks again....Cathy

Fuel Pump
Hey guys,
Sorry it took so long to get back, but it's been a hectic week. It was the fuel pump and luckily it was covered under the warranty. Some how dirt got in it, so they replaced it and the fuel filter and cleaned the injectors. Thanks again.
