I have a 1996 Mercury Sable that I bought new. There is a smell when I put the heat on. There are no obvious leaks visible. Does this sound like the heater core to anyone?

If the smell is a sickly sweet type, you've probably hit the nail on the head. Can't remember if the heater core is a common failure item on that car or not, but wouldn't be surprised given the long list of other parts on Sable/Taurus with overly short life spans.
