Altenator working??

Altenator working??
I have a 94 Ford Explorer. The battery was dead this morning. I checked to be sure we had'nt left the lights on etc...all good.
I jumped the car & checked the voltage with the car running. 12.5V.
Is'nt that an indicator that the altenator is not charging?
I read somewhere that the Volts should be at 14 or 14.5V with the engine running. Thanks for any input.

next step
Time to replace alternator but before you do make sure all wires are hooked up.
I venture to say they are but there is a slim chance. If they are all good remove it and take it to the parts place and have them check it. While you are at it clean battery posts with a wire brush and coat posts with a light coat of grease.
You probably know this but before you remove the alternator disconnect the battery.
good luck

it probably is your alternator. when your car is running it should be 14-15 volts. id first try leaving a trickle charge on the battery overnight and cleaning it off to make sure you dont have any charge jumping accross. but if it does it again, you should probably replace your alternator
