98 Montero Sport Oxygen Sensor help
My wife's check engine light came on the other day so I took it over to Auto Zone to have the computer checked. They said the error has something to do with the emmission control and I should check the oxygen sensors.
Well I can usually do my own auto work if I have something to follow but I can't find a book on her car for this year.
Does anyone have a picture or diagram on where the O2 sensors are?
Thanks
steve

Start at the exhaust manifold there will be one screwed into the pipe between the manifold and the catalytic converter. If it is a v-6 there will be one on each side. There may also be one after the converter. The auto store should be able to tell you how many you have.
They kind of look like a spark plug with either 2 or 4 wires coming out of the end.

Thanks,
This is a V6 but I was only able to find two of them (1 before, 1 after the cat).
Couldn't get them off yet, I was able to turn the rear one a couple of times but that was it. I"ve sprayed them with liquid wrench so hopefully they loosen up.
I also couldn't unplug the wires, is there a switch to unplug them? They're in a postition where I can't see the plug.

Not sure about the wire connections.
To remove the sensors, run the engine for a while and heat up the exhaust system. The sensors will come out easier. Be careful not to burn yourself. The converter gets very hot, very quickly. What exact code did AutoZone pull for your car??

Sorry Dirty dan but I don't remember the exact code (it was something like P017, But I can't be for sure) The guy said it was a generic Emmissions error that could be either the cat or the O2 sensors, I'm going with the sensors first because they're cheaper and the car is at 104000 miles
I won't be able to work on it again until the weekend so I can probably go back and get another reading if you want.

I would get and post the code before I bought any parts. The guys at AZ aren't mechcanics & I wouldn't take their word without bouncing it off someone else first. There are some pretty competent people on this board who can really be of help if they are given enough information.

If you follow the wires you should come to a plug in connector. They usually have a tab that has to be pressed to allow the plug to be pulled apart.
If you found 1 between the Y pipe and the converter and 1 after the converter then you should only have 2. Some v-8 & v-6 motors have one on each header pipe befor the converter and 1 after each converter.
Follow dirty dan's advice and get the exact code and post it. Someone here may be able to give advice befor you start changing parts.

Error code
Finally got the error code for the Moneto Sport.
Its's:
P0420 Catalyst Efficiency below threashold (Bank 1)
So should I be bothering with the O2 sensors?
Which one?
And a new sensor has 4 wires, 2 white, 1 black, 1 grey and no plug.
Do I just match the colors if/when i can get the old ones out?
thanks

Bank 1 is the row of cylinders with cylinder 1 in it. If the cat is not working properly, changing the sensor will NOT fix it. Take the car to a dealer & ask them to monitor the signals from the O2 sensor & the cat monitor. If the signals look alike, the cat is damaged. If you do need the sensor, get it from the dealer for your car. Universal ones may not be calibrated to your car's specs. A converter monitor signal should show a steady voltage (.6 or .7) on a monitor. Don't replace parts because of a code discription without diag 1st becuse it may not fix anything Don't bother with the O2 sensors for a cat monitor code
