Key replacement

I went to get an extra igntion key for my wifes 04 Mits. endaver and the dealer informed me it would cost $80.00. Thirty five for the blank and forty five to reprogram the car. Last time I had extra keys made for my Ford truck they cost me a couple of bucks at the local hardware. Do I have any options besides the dealer? Many Thanks

No, Times have changed. You need special key's and equipment to program them.

The reason the key blank is so expensive, is because it has the transmitter for the security system built into it. A regular key blank will put the car into "Anti-Theft" mode. Check your owners manual. Some cars will let you program your own keys if you have 2 working ones now!!
