'96 Escort Mystery Duct

Ok Ford experts, my daughter's '96 Escort [if anybody asks I'll deny we have a Ford in the family] has a small, flat plastic duct that runs from the area of the left side of the front grill under the air filter box and exits just in front of the battery. It has no apparent purpose (which I know is an old Ford tradition), but what the heck is it supposed to be for? Air-cooling for the battery????

Measure it with a micrometer; cut it with an ax.

I have seen these ducts, I think they are using the duct to cool the battery. I don't know why? But the battery is install close to the firewall. And we all know heat rises!
