93 ESCORT Trans OD problem
#1

Tranny shop is closed today and I need an answer so I plead for help. My senior neighbor has a 93 Ford Escort, 1.9 ltr with 4 spd OD auto trans. It stopped shifting into OD. My scantool says it's a bad Shift Solenoid #1. Is the shift solenoid external or internal. If internal, can I just drop the pan or does the valve body have to come out too? Thanks for any help.

There is a TSB, #253, that states that if you are getting a solenoid code 60,61,62, or 63. There could be an issue where one or more solenoids wires have become pinched between the valve body and the trans case. There is a re-route procedure that makes it impossible to get the wires pinched in the future. Resistance of the solenoids is 13-27 ohms. the solenoids are internal. I do not know if servicing the solenoids requires removing the valve body. Unfortunately its a 50/50 chance.
Hope this helps ya,
