stumbling toyota

I recently bought a 1989 Toyota 4x4 pickup. It has started stumbling (like you let your foot suddenly pop off the throttle) after driving for an hour or two at 65mph or greater. I don't feel it at slower speeds. The check engine light will come on some times (not every time) and go right back off. HELP!

OUTPUT OF DIAGNOSTIC CODES
To obtain an output of diagnostic codes, proceed as follows:
1. Initial conditions
(a) Battery voltage above 11 volts.
(b) Throttle valve fully closed (throttle position sensor
IDL points closed).
(c) Transmission in neutral position.
(d) Accessory switches OFF.
(e) Engine at normal operating temperature.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Do not start the engine.
3. Using jumper connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector under the hood.

Thank you a lot Toyotaman. So the computer will store a code even when the check engine light doesn't stay on?
