Some trouble starting

I own a 2003 Chevy Malibu with approx. 35000 miles, and the oil is changed every 3k. Every once in a while maybe once or twice a week the car has difficulty starting. The starter sounds and the engine turns over, and it sounds like the car has started, but on releasing the key the engine dies. Subsequent tries result in the same ending unless I press down on the gas while starting whereupon the car starts right up and runs beautifully afterwards. At that point turning off the car and restarting causes the car to start right up. I hope it's a simple answer, thanks a ton for any help.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch, dispite the fact that it is a low mileage car.

If it is, it will get worse with time and be easier to diagnose. On a good day, after the engine is running, you could lightly wiggle the key to see if the engine dies.
