Does anyone know if I can replace the air compressor and alternator on my 98 s70 volvo? I have a pretty decent knowlage of the car and I have replaced and alternator before.

I don't know about your Volvo model specifically, but alternators and AC compressors are generally pretty straight forward:

1. Disconnect battery before working on the alternator.
2. You will need to find a repair shop that will pull the refrigerant out of the ac system prior to your doing the compressor. Do NOT just vent it to the atmosphere. Once you've opened the system, you will also have to replace the receiver/drier, so locate it and see how difficult an evolution that will be as well. When you're done, take it back to the repair shop to have the system evacuated and recharged.

Measure it with a micrometer; cut it with an ax.
