Transmission problems

I have a 97 Chevrolet Ventura. I here a whining noise when I start it up and when it shifts. Yesterday, it shifted ok but overdrive seems to be missing. Could it be a transmission fluid pump or filter going out?

First thing, check your transmission fluid quality and level. Make sure it is a bright red color and doesnt smell burnt. This could be a serious problem if not taken care of.
