Electrical Problem

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee and have been having a problem with my gauges. While driving, my tach and speedometer go dead while my water, battery and oil pressure gauges are functioning normally. This happens mostly when it's wet out but today it started happening in good weather as well. Also, for the first time all gauges went out on me. Eventually the problem corrects itself. Usually after I've hit a bump in the road. I know that jeep's are notorious for electrical problems and I know the dealership would probably charge a small fortune to resolve. Can anyone help a beginner repair the problem?
Thanks,
Mike

First thing I would check is the ground wire to the gauges. Sounds like it makes or loosens the connection when you hit rough spots.

Gauge problem

Thanks for the advise. I just got back from a business trip and the gauges were fine. The ground wire is as good a place as any to start.
