97 LeSabre ignition key replacement

I just bought a 1997 Buick LeSabre and my question is about the ignition key. I only have 1 set of keys & want 2 more sets made. Apparently the key is for a security lockout system. Not familar with it. I have been told its a special key I have to get from G.M... Cost about $35 - $ 40???

I was told I would have to have a dealer make the keys.

Is there any way I can just get a less expensive key that will work & start the car. I don't really care about its security...

Thank you for any suggestions. Bob (coldbeer)

Have you checked a local locksmith? If it's the key with a little black chip in it - you will see it near the top of the key - many locksmiths have a device which can read the code. They can then duplicate the key for about half the dealer's charge.
A plain key, without the chip, will not start your car.

And if it's the kind with out the visible chip, look near the handle of the key where it might have PK3 stamped into it. If it does, u need to take it to the dealer.
