1998 hyundai transmission problem

My fathers 1998 Hyundai Elantra 1.8L automatic trans.about once a week the tranmission will shift into a lower gear and then shift back. It happens when going 40 to 70 miles/hour.He had codes read at garage and they said speed sensor.Does this sound like transmission or sensor or something else?Garage said they don't work on Hyundais

Has the "check eninge" light come on. Usually this should come on along with a code. It is certainly possible that a faulty VSS could cause this. However a plugged or mafunctioning shift solenoid or other things within the trans could also cause such symptoms.

It should be ralatively straightforward to test the VSS. You can buy the service manual for your trans and it will tell you how to test the VSS among other things. This should give you a better idea on what may be faulty.

How long since the trans was serviced. You could also try a service to see if it helps (fluid changes, clean magnet etc). I would also ask that the oil cooler be flushed to clear the system of debris.
