oil in water

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer xls.
We had to add water ( QT) to the resevoir which is unusual.
Today as we were driving down the freeway the engine began to lose power and stopped. Towed the vehicle back home, checked the oil dipstick and appeared normal. However we did see what appeared to be a gasoline spot on top of the valve cover coming from the hose (PVC) attached to the air cleaner hose. After checking air filter it was damp with gasoline. Then we checked the oil filler cap and water appears to be mixed with oil. ANy ideas on this? Thanks for your help.

Any sign of water in the oil and you'll need to worry about a blown head gasket. That also meshes with your loss of power and the engine stopping. I would suspect you may have overheated it badly and the head gasket is gone. Also possible warped head. I'm afraid you're in for another tow bill to a good shop to have it checked out.
