Troubleshooting 98 Explorer gas gauge

I have 98 Ford Explorer sport, 4.0 SOHC engine, 2 wheel drive, automatic trans with 48,000 miles on it.

The problem is that the gas gauge when full stops on the 3/4 full mark. The gauge is the type that maintains it's reading when the ignition key is removed.

What things can I do to determine if it is the gauge or the sending unit?

Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't say anything definite without looking at a wiring diagram, but sending unit use a potentiometer that produces a different voltage at different fuel levels. If you find the wires and supply them with full voltage (whatever that happens to be) and the guage goes all the way up, then I would condemn the sender; if not, the guage.
