Rusted & Broken Shifter Cable on '99 Camry?
My '99 Camry Shifter cable just broke! After jacking up the car, I discovered that the shifter cable is exposed to the elements during a portion of its travel to the linkage. The cable design appears to be the culprit, and the replacement looks the same.
I contacted my local dealer and one of the service technicians said it was somewhat of a common occurance for transmission shifter cables to rust out and brake at or near the same location in the '99 Camry. If in fact, the problem of a broken shifter cable is somewhat common for this model Toyota, why doesn't the manufacturer put out a service bulletin? Has anyone experienced similar issues with rusty or broke shifter cables on this type of vehicle? They said replacing the cable would be around $435. Is this something I can do?

Must be related to your area/weather etc because I have never seen one break. Here on Long Island we do use road salt but maybe not to the extent in your area.
All depend on how handy you are, requires removing the console and routing the cable.
