a/c jackhammer-like noise

Have a 2002 buick century. The air conditioner blows cold air, however, when running, makes a very loud "jackhammer-like" sound, which can be heard better from the outside of the car.

Anyone have an idea of what the most likely problem is? Is this definitely a compressor problem? If so, has the compressor gone bad? or is there any way to repair, or must it be replaced?

Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I have seen this type of noise when the fan blade for the a/c condenser is broken/missing/loose. Check all the plastic fan blades.
