A/C only cools on the highway in hot weather

Basically, when the weather warms up so does my A/C in my 1999 Isuzu Rodeo. The a/c will not cool off if I am in stop and go traffic in hot weather. However, once I am on the highway driving continuously, it will send cool air. I had the A/C shocked last year, but don't think I need to do that again. Any thoughts on what is going on with my AC. Thanks!

Probably just low on refrigerant. When it gets lower, it will shut off completely.

You have a leak.

According to EPA law, a system cannot be topped off without first being tested for and repairing any leaks.

A leak can get worse fast and you could lose the full charge in a week. Trust me, it happens. On the other hand, 1 can a year may work. Time will tell.

I would also suggest checking if the condenser fan is working. If it is broken the airflow from driving may be simulating the fan and you get cooling as a result.

Check fan operation, make sure the condensor is clean and free of dirt rocks and bugs.
But most likely you have a small leak, it would be a good idea to have dye added next time u have it charged so it makes it easy to find the smaal leak.

Rodeos are good for fan clutch issues..........the truck probably is running a bit hotter than normal too
With the engine running CAREFULLY.............try to cop a feel of the airflow behind the fan........If the fan isn't throwing any air replace the fan clutch
