Question 12 volt Generator check

How do I check a generator to see if it is charging? It is on a 1978 Kubota tractor.

A simple indicator would be to read battery voltage with engine off. Then read battery voltage with engine on, and it should be a higher voltage.

Lugnut,

I know it is not charging, I just don't know if it is the Generator or something else in the charging system.

Thanks,

If not the generator, then it is the regulator (assuming it is not built in to the generator) or the battery itself. To test the regulator I would disconnect it from the system, set up your meter on the battery as Lugnut suggests and -- ** only for a very short time ** -- start the engine and see if you see the voltage rises.

This does not rule out the battery. I suggest you take it out and have someone load test it. Anywhere that sells batteries should be able to do this.

Pardon me, brain fart. If when you remove the regulator the generator charges, then it is the regulator. It would only be the battery if it didn't hold a charge.
