96 dodge dakota 4x4

When traveling down the highway...it doesn't seem to make a big difference in speed.. but normally highway speed.. the truck just bucks and acts as if there is a backfire. it will do this intermently for a few seconds.. and then run normally for a while and then here comes the "backfires" again.

It is a 3.9L with auto transmission, and has approx. 56xxx miles on it.

Thanks

A muffled sound (not backfire sound) and a buck sounds like a misfire to me. New plugs and a tune up may solve this. If not, its a good place to start.
